FAA Expected to Release Drone Regulations by End of January

Both civilians and commercial drone users alike have been long awaiting an official list of regulations from the FAA. While this release was initially expected to be published by the end of November, industry and government officials are now pushing that timeline to the end of January 2015.

While civilian drone use has been allowed up to this point, it is expected that these new regulations will enforce stricter criteria onto both civilian and commercial users. These rules are expected to include; restricting drones over 55 pounds, flying under an altitude of 400 feet, flying during daylight hours only, and requiring drones to be kept in sight of the operator. The most troublesome of these rules will most likely be the possibility of requiring each operator to obtain a pilots license.

The FAA has already issued four permits thus far; one to Trimble Navigation Limited, one to VDOS Global LLC, one to Clayco Inc, and two to Woolpert Inc. They have also issued permits to six film production companies as well, including Aerial Mob, Astraeus Aerial, HeliVideo Productions, Pictorvision, Snaproll Media, and Vortex Aerial. Hollywood has made a point of stressing both the significant cost savings and improved safety of using drones over helicopter filming. Allowing Hollywood to use drones will also allow more of these movies to be able to film domestically, instead of having to outsource these services abroad where the regulations are more lax.

The highest concern of both the FAA and government officials has been the risk of collision between drones and commercial aircrafts. Airline Captain Ben Burman was recently quoted at an Air Line Pilots Association forum as saying “ As a Boeing 737 Captain, I’ll be damned if myself and 178 other people are taken down by a 12-pound or a 150-pound piece of metal coming through my windshield. There are too many near misses occurring every day like this”.

Luckily congress has acknowledged both the practical uses and economic benefits of commercial drone use. Representative Bill Shuster of PA was quoted as saying “We understand UAS are an exciting technology with the potential to transform parts of our economy…It is our responsibility to take a closer look”.

2015 CCFA Take Steps

BJ was the honored hero at the Take Steps Walk in Fairfield, CT

Another year down in the fight against the suffering caused by Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, two very debilitating digestive diseases.

In this year’s edition, McElroy Film’s videographers were sent to Atlanta, Boston, and Fairfield, CT to film Take Steps Walk Events. This time, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) asked to focus the video on BJ, a young boy who has already suffered for years. Despite it all, BJ has developed a very positive outlook on life and has devoted himself to helping raise money and awareness with his parents’ help. Also included are similar voices who have suffered or know someone with the diseases and raised money to help find cures and help keep support programs alive and well.

Webinar Video – Fenway Institute

McElroy Films had the distinct pleasure to film several webinars for the Boston-based non-profit, Fenway Health, over the last half of 2013. The Fenway Institute, the research arm of the non-profit, uses the webinar videos to educate their own staff and the world at large as to the state of LGBT health including the HIV and AIDS epidemic domestically and abroad. The speakers go to great lengths to condense mountains of data into easy-to-comprehend findings, that help the LGBT community choose the best course of action when it comes to an array of health issues. Many of the webinars count as college credit for many universities in Boston and beyond.

Whether you are LGBT or know someone who is, the topics discussed are fascinating and really differ from popular and media assumptions on the gay community today. You can find more webinars here at the LGBT Health Education Center’s Vimeo page, but below is a teaser for the series of videos:

WWPass Overview Video

Manchester, New Hampshire-based WWPass is gearing up to take the business and personal computing world by storm. McElroy Films was enlisted to help WWPass create a series of videos helping to describe how their passkey products can help the online and cloud needs of everyone from small business to the Fortune 500. The video below is the first in a series and give a very basic and comical overview of the WWPass key and some of it’s applications. Future videos will help describe, in depth, how the product works and even more specific applications.

On a time crunch, the team at McElroy Films was able to take this video from script to screen in less than 2 weeks, a monumental undertaking considering the amount of preproduction planning and post production and graphics. Not only did the team complete the product, but was able to lay down custom music and professional voice over, as well as incredible custom graphics to simulate ‘the hacker’ reaching into a laptop and stealing information and files.

McElroy Films New Studio

New Location. Same commitment to quality and service.

McElroy Films has moved down the street to 99 South Bedford road in Burlington, MA, just minutes from Boston. The new space provides sorely needed space for new video editors as well as a dedicated studio space for green screen shoots and interviews. The new space has a state-of-the-art 3D theater with surround sound and comfy seating. The space is very distinct with the main area designed as a completely open concept from the front to the rear of the office. Editors will have new freedom to collaborate on projects in the open area and take their lunch in the new staff lounge. There are also be two enclosed editing suites for client visits and audio editing featuring client monitoring and seating. Over all, the space will really accommodate the fast growing company with even more space to grow in the immediate future and beyond.
